Updated 18:00 on 1/10/2023 with pictures showing one ladder was secured — read below
Readers have brought to our attention that Xatt L-Aħmar in Gozo, the site of the iconic wrecks Karwela, Cominoland, Xlendi and Hephaestus (scuttled last year) now has two new wrecks, the main access ladders!
Falling into pieces, rickety, getting out of their cement slots and no retaining bolts/chains also means that soon, a diver may be injured. Photos below clearly show these ladders can become a health hazard, rather than an aid.
We are reporting this today (15/10/2023) to Eco-Gozo and other entities for the earliest attention possible, as it seems this ladder has been going from bad to worse for quite some time….
Pity that this is a prime Gozo diving spot!

Eco-Gozo has advised divers that this issue has been passed on to the workshop for necessary action.
Updated 19:00 on 16/10/2023 – One ladder fixed
The below pictures were sent to us after workers this morning were spotted carrying out maintenance on the Xatt l-Ahmar ladders. One has been secured with chains, whilst apparently the other may need new retaining hook raw bolts as they are well rusted off. We thank the workers and wish to see the job completed before stormy season really kicks in.
Let us know if status changes before we report on it.
