You may have read already about the article we posted about the Wied iż-Żurrieq proposed refurbishment project which divers called out as potentially resulting in less accessibility.
13 days later we are very happy to report that 334 representations have been sent by divers to the project as filed with the Planning Authority through our representation facility. These have been duly filed with the Planning Authority, and so far at the time of writing these are the only representations made against the project as proposed. It does not mean that other users might not be against, but simply unaware.
In the meantime, we have been contacted by Hon. Omar Farrugia, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works to attend a meeting on the matter. During the meeting, held today and attended by the Hon. Hon. Farrugia, technical persons from the same Ministry, divinginfo.mt and other representatives from the diving industry PDSA and MTA, the issues about the proposed project were discussed. Multiple alternatives to address the shortcomings of the site, as well as suggestions to first of all improve the area and accessibility for divers, visitors making use of boat trip services and potential new uses were raised.
The main message put forward by us and the diving industry representatives was that the project as described currently is a big missed opportunity. Whilst restrictions on what can be made at the site are a reality, and every proposal comes with a cost, a new vision can emerge on how to service current and future needs for all area users whilst tapping into opportunities that currently are not served. Ideas are plenty, which can be both factual and sustainable.
We hope this meeting has served to provide some more insight for the planners, but we need your help to drive the point further through.
Nothing is better than having a vision which includes a graphic idea of how Wied iż-Żurrieq could become a premier tourist and local destination for all seasons, whilst retaining the charm of a small seaside fishing hamlet, but with a touch of modernity in terms of the evolving interaction of today’s visitors. Ideas have evolved since our first article, thanks partially to your feedback.
So if anyone with good 3d graphic artistry abilities and a passion for diving (or is a friend of someone who does) would be willing to help – please get in touch! via our social media page or by email to d@divinginfo.mt.
Let’s keep pushing!
