The below is an interesting short clip (in Maltese) which has been just published about divers within the Armed Forces of Malta covering the role of diver, basic training and day to day to work.
In this interview, Sgt. Coleiro, a member of the Ammo & Explosives Squadron which holds within it the Diving section, gives an overview of the role of divers within the AFM.
As an introduction, he remarks that the Diving section falls under this squadron primarily due to the fact that around the Maltese Islands, explosives from World War 2 are still regularly discovered by local divers.
The Diving section carries out studies about such findings and then prepares plans to safely recover such explosives and then dispose of them appropriately.
The Diving section also assists the Malta Police Force in the clearing and checking of areas in preparation for vessel visits, as well in search & recovery for evidence or individuals.
Divers from the AFM also carry out maintenance duties for the Maritime Squadron and operates year-round, weather and sea conditions permitting.
The Diving section is formed by armed forces personnel who show an interest in joining the section and then successfully complete the required training, which includes training not just about diving protocols, but also about explosives. Divers are trained in all aspects needed within their duties, but they also have the opportunity to progress within their role. Members are trained by instructors serving within its fold.
The role has its challenges, but also achievements. From carrying out security clearing operations, to recovering explosives following the appropriate planning, as well as recovering missing persons thus helping families achieve closure in case of tragedies.
