Yesterday some instructors have advised on a local group that “Thiefs are going round on the divesites again. Last days suspicious activity in the north, today broken into several cars in Xatt L’Ahmar”
Divinginfo.mt did manage to speak to someone whose clients were robbed, cash was taken from their possessions. It is possible that the thief was mingling around divers trying to appear as if he was there for diving, but then used the busy kitting up / down period or the period whilst divers are in the water to pilfer.
The person spoken to by this site advised that a suspicious looking person, a potential late middle-aged stocky Maltese looking individual with snorkeling equipment, hat and glasses was noticed to be hanging around the site, even speaking to some individuals. He also recalled that it looks like the same person who in the past had been suspected of such activities in Cirkewwa a couple of years ago and photographed.
Divinginfo.mt has passed on descriptions and the old photograph again to the Police in case this may lead to find the suspect, or catch him if in the area. Due to the lack of verification whether the actual individual is a potential suspect, we are not sharing this photo here.
How can you prevent such thefts?
- Do file Police Reports even if just cash has been taken – it’s the only way to try to track the thief unless there’s witnesses.
- Take the minimum stuff to leave in the car unattended, and if the car has an alarm, leave it on.
- Keep an eye out for a potential late middle-aged stocky Maltese looking individual with snorkeling equipment, hat and glasses, circling around dive trucks and vehicles. Be also aware of other people hanging around that don’t have an apparent purpose to be there.
