Divers last Sunday on a boat dive at Dawra tas-Sanap, south east of Gozo came across the images we are showing you here. A small piece of trammel net (roughly less than the size of a garage door) seems to have been torn off by a rock, probably due to fishing very close to the cliffs, and the result… two nice fish (a large Scorpionfish and probably a Parrotfish) getting entangled and became food for the Fireworms.
A reminder to all fishermen – if you lose any fishing gear (especially pots and part of, or whole nets), report it with the Department of fisheries on 22926888 so that they send in Żibel to retrieve it. Leaving it there will reduce your catches in the future!
This specific piece of net was removed by the divers on site but this is not always possible and special training, equipment and resources are needed, which Żibel is able to muster. Divers please be aware – these nets are as deadly to the fish as they may be to you – leave it for those who have the training and equipment to do so!
