In the evening of 5th March 1941, an estimated sixty bombers accompanied by Messerschmitt fighters, raided the Island. The Ju87 (J9+CH Werk-Nr.5297) crewed by Uffz Wilhelm Singer and Obgfr Paul Stapf was shot down into the sea off Zonqor Point.
On 22nd June 1983, the Junkers Jumo aeroengine from the aircraft was recovered, with prior permission from the Museums Dept, for exhibiting at the National War Museum, Lower Fort St Elmo, Valletta. This was the first aeroengine recovery I had organised while being an active member of the NWM Association.
My thanks go to my scuba-diving friends, Dive Systems & Scubapro, the AFM Maritime Squadron and finally the Apprentices at Malta Drydocks.
