It was an environmentally themed last week at ATLAM Sub-Aqua Club as part of the celebrations for Earth Day on the 23 of April 2023
On Thursday 20 April an interesting presentation was held at ATLAM Sub-Aqua Club in Bahar ic-Caghaq in collaboration with Zibel and Mr Ede Kossari Tarnik, presenting a ongoing research project which is one of the first studies about microplastics in the water column around the Maltese Islands.
It was definitely an interesting presentation with a lot of scientific and practical knowledge about the sources of marine plastics around the world’s oceans, but also, the manner in which research is being conducted to obtain more information about how extensive such pollution is. We even heard about studies telling us that this stuff is finding itself in our own blood!
A keynote statement to note: even if we stopped using plastics right now, most of this stuff will outlive us for another 500 years!

On another even more interesting event, ATLAM organised the Earth Day Interactive Cleanup 2023 at Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq on Saturday 22 April, in which children stepped in to do their bit, cleaning up the shoreline at Bahar ic-Caghaq, followed up by an art & educational event at the ATLAM Clubhouse nearby.
Well done to all the organisers, presenters and participants, especially the kids!
