Update: Dangerous navigation – Xatt l-Ahmar

Updated with apology by boat owner

It’s the beginning of summer, and as seen in past years, it’s still not clear whether mariners are aware of why there are yellow buoys in various spots around the coast. Many of these indicate a wreck (the yellow buoys with an “X” on top), and as per Notice to Mariners 42 of 2017, boats should keep away at least 100m from these buoys and only navigate at slow speed.

The below boat captain seems to either be unaware or carefree… remember, the purpose for this distance is to ensure the safety of SCUBA and Freedivers who might be in the zone. Navigating close-by can stress the divers due to the noise generated by the boat, which underwater feels even more close than it may be in reality, as well as a potential collision hazard.

Transport Malta enforces this Notice to Mariners and other relevant notices that you can find here. This can result in a nasty fine. Boat numbers/names are being passed on to Transport Malta for prosecution by divers and other NGOs on a regular basis. Please share – the aim is to ensure the safety of all (and save you a fine)!

Thanks to the divers who sent us the below footage.

Update: The boat owner got in touch with divinginfo.mt and sent his apology for this instance and provided an explanation for what happened and ensured better care will be taken in the future to navigate more safely.
