It’s a grim anniversary today… 30 years since the explosion on board the Um el Faroud on 3 February 1995 at the Malta dockyards which resulted in the death of 9 dock workers.
Today’s Times of Malta has published an informative article on the tragedy, as well as a podcast which has a few of the people who went on site of the tragedy as well as relatives recount their experiences. The wreck was subsequently scuttled off Wied iż-Żurrieq, limits of Qrendi, on 2 September 1998. Unfortunately, a few more lives were taken since by the wreck, but overall, hundreds of thousands of safe and pleasurable dives were carried out, making it the prime recreational wreck dive on the Maltese Islands.
Rest in Peace to all the victims.
